Have you ever took a moment to think about the importance of closed caption to comprehension of a TV show? At a place that there is not the possibility to hear what is being saying, or in the houses with people who has hearing impairment and need this to enjoy the television. In any situation the CC is something indispensable and deserves some attention.
The closed caption can be produced in two ways. For stenotype, who consist in utilization of one simplify phonetic keyboard, the stereotype, who let put on the screen more words in less time than a conventional computer keyboard. The other, is for voice recognizement, made for ShowCasePRO. In the booth, is necessary a lot of concentration of the professional, allied to the practice, to have a final product with quality.
And when the subtitle doesn’t come into the TV viewers with the wished quality? A lot of complaints turns around the incomprehensible words that are putted on the screen, beyond the late of transmissions, who cause irritation for not being in synchrony with the articulation of speaks in the TV show. However, is not just the service of evolved professionals in the backstage of closed caption, but also the fact that not every TV set or services of pay television does not the CC function in their programs the reason of indignation of the hearing impaired.
And who tells more about the facilities and difficulties of the closed caption in the life of hearing impaired is Gabriela Magalhães, 27, who has the hearing impaired hard e with kindness gave to ShowCase an exclusive interview. Married to Fabiano, sign language interpreter and Anne’s mother, that even a child, try the oral language. She told to ShowCase a little about her experience with the closed caption in her routine.
ShowCase PRO: Your hearing impaired is in your life since you were born or the lost was with the time? How it was for you this process of diagnosis and acceptance?i
Gabriela Magalhães: I found the lost hearing with 18 years old, when I started to work. I believe that was with time (the lost hearing), because I can read mouths and use sign language since I was a child, because my brother can’t hear anything.
SC: Do you use some lyric hearing or cochlear implant?
Gabriela: I don’t use and I disagree. I used lyric hearing with 18 until 23 years old and then I stopped because I realized that I was very dependent, that to me ,apparently was worst because I had moderate to profound hearing loss.
SC: Your communication is just for sign language or you can have oral communication?
Gabriela: My whole childhood was in contact with sign language because of my brother. How I had never troubles in the communication with my family, I had a hearing life, until I start to work, with 18 years old, as receptionist. I suffered a lot because when I answered the calls, couldn’t understand what the clients were saying and they called me incompetent. My boyfriend in that time, now he is my husband, told me to do an audiometry, because he realized something different in my speak and in some situations that he talked to me and I didn’t answer.
SC: Do you like watching TV? Consider an important way of communication and always in your routine?
Gabriela: I really like TV, especially, subtitle movies. If I start to watch, I will be hours watching a lot of movies.
Gabriela, her husband Fabiano and her daughter Anne.
SC: Do you use closed caption when you watch TV? How is this experience for you?
Gabriela: I can’t live without closed caption. The houses that the TV transmission is for Digital TV is easier to put closed caption, but recently I hired the SKY(pay TV) services and I got disappointed because, appearently they don’t have this resource! There is not communication to hearing impaired in any channel? What? I still cannot not be in shock with this situation. To can watch the TV, I have to turn up the volume to can understand what is happening, and with the possibility the neighborhoods complain, because the TV’s volume is very high. Nowadays I am very unsatisfied with no accessibility of the company’s services.
SC: Do you see difference in the quality when the TV shows are recording and when is live, like news and entertainment shows?
Gabriela: Yes, a lot! In the news, the closed caption is used to be like the subject, with a little late in the closed caption’s transmission. I am not used to watch novels, but in the times that I watched there were really late or with uncomprehensive words.
SC: For you, what needs to change? Is there a long time that you cannot understand?
Gabriela: To me, what needs to change first, is the lateness in the closed caption’s transmission and the guarantee that all TVs will try to give us shows with the same accessibility. Why I can watch novels and I can’t watch stand up with my daughter? Every channel should have this really import instrument available in all shows.
SC: For you, is enough the time that closed caption stay in the screen to understand everything that they say?
Gabriela: Yes, to me is enough. Hearing impaired are 100% visuals, so the reading is really fast.
SC: Which TVs are you used to watch?
Gabriela: I watch more, in the not pay TV, Globo, SBT,Record. In the TV pay, I watch more the Universal Channel, because there is more subtitle movies – I lost a lot of time watching (laughs) – and another international movie channels. I am not used to watch national movies because they don’t have subtitle in the pay TV.
SC: There is another hearing impaired in your family? Do you talk to him/her about possible improvements in the closed caption on TV?
Gabriela: Yes, my brother. He has the same trouble as me. Once, we went to the movies to watch something and there wasn’t subtitle movies in that time. So we watch a movie without subtitle because of my another little brother, he was 5 years old in that time. And guess what? Everyone understood the movie, but me and him didn’t understand.
SC: Would you like to let some message about the importance of accessibility in the communication?
Gabriela: When we look for the word accessibility, we see the idea to let the hearing impaired people join in the social, fisic, and intellectual activities. Are we really living in the world that this guarantee is for all impaired people? In the past, people saw the impaired like a poor and sick people. Is necessary to take off this wrong idea of the people’s mind. I’m graduated in business, work as marketing analyst and I am responsible to take care of a big company’s bills. I am a financial, quality and environment audit, I mean, nothing is impossible when we have dreams and objectives in life. When I founded my lost hearing, was a really hard shock, because people said that I was incompetent, but actually, I had an impaired. I felt really bad because I started to feel incompetent. I had to go to psychologist to can accept my difficulties and now I am thankful to God, to can do things better and quickly than “normal” people around. I cannot forget this big bless that God gave me, because I got married with a sign language interpreter who give me a lot of support in all my decisions and he is my best friend, partner and give me support in all difficulties that my impaired does sometimes. We have a strong connection, Fabio felt when I need support and never refuse help with sign language, what makes me feel inside of the subjects. This is accessibility. Is necessary that people and the institutions have contact with the impaired to see our limitations and can make quality instruments, with good professionals who help them.
